She won back-to-back Pitcher of the Week awards in March. Kuper went 4-0 over the span of the conference tournament increasing her win total to 21 on the season, good for 11th in the nation and set the wins record in a single season in SDC history. The 21 wins were also best in the GSAC this season. She went 4-0 with an ERA of 1.5 to help the Hawks reach the GSAC title game for the first time in school history.

Neal earned her first conference award of the season. Neal recorded a hit in every game of the GSAC tournament to the tune of a .500 batting average. The freshman collected 4 doubles and 6 RBI. She finished with a school-record nine home runs on the season.

Both Neal and Kuper were also named to the All-GSAC Team.

ATHERTON, Calif. – Beating Menlo in the morning earned the Hawks a date with Arizona Christian in the GSAC Championship game.

But an unfortunate game-ending double-play ended the Hawks season as the Firestorm defeated SDC 7-6 in the title game.

The Hawks won Game 1 over Menlo 2-1 to reach the final game.

Jordan Neal hit a double down the left-field line scoring Samantha Campos for the 1-0 lead. Ariel Rasmusson then his a single to center, plating Neal for the only runs SDC would score. The Oaks added a run in the sixth but Kendra Kuper shut the game down to advance.

Kuper was brilliant on the mound throwing the seven innings allowing three hits, the earned run, while striking out eight with no walks.

The top half of the first inning in Game 2 started off well for SDC as they took a 1-0 lead over ACU. Neal hit an RBI single, scoring Victoria Harris.

But the bottom half of the inning was not so pleasant.

The Firestorm added four runs in the bottom of the first to take the momentum.

After three scoreless innings, the Hawks cut their deficit to one. Shelbianne Evans reched on a fielder's choice with Brenda Martinez scoring from third on the play. Neal then hit a sac fly for the third run of the game.

But again, the Firestorm answered with a big inning, this time in the bottom of the sixth. ACU added three runs to take a 7-3 lead.

The Hawks didn't give up. They made things very interesting in the top of the seventh. Harris led off with a single but was later retired as Campos reached on a fielder's choice. Evans then doubled to deep right center giving the Hawks runners on second and third. Rasmusson followed with an RBI single to right scoring Campos. Neal tallied her third RBI of the game with another single and Samantha Young reached on a throwing error, cutting their deficit to one, with runners on first and third with only one out.

A pitching changed occurred for the Firestorm and Kuper pinched hit for Kaylyn Rubalcava.

Threatening to tie the game and keep the runs coming, Kuper hit a bullet to second base. Unfortunately for the Hawks, the ACU second baseman tagged out Young to end the game.

Neal led the team with 3 RBI in Game 2. She collected four on the day.

The Hawks will have to wait on an at-large birth into the NAIA Opening Round Tournament. Teams will be released May 10.

[Softball] Softball Sets Wins Record; Advances to Day 3

ATHERTON, Calif. – School record for wins. Check. Advancing to the GSAC Championships; Check… on that Saturday.

The SDC softball team won both games Friday en route for a chance to play Arizona Christian for the GSAC title. The Hawks won 5-0 in the morning over William Jessup and 9-1 in five innings over Vanguard.

With the wins, SDC has now won 33 games, two higher than the previous record.

In Game 1, the Hawks scored five an inning, and that was enough. After two scoreless, Jordan Neal delivered the first RBI of the game scoring Shelbianne Evans. The next three runs were from defensive errors from the Warriors. Samantha Campos drew a bases loaded walk for the inning's fifth run, which capped all scoring.

SDC starter, Kendra Kuper, threw six innings of four-hit ball earning her 19th win of the season. Cheyanna Contreras pitched an inning in relief allowing no hits or walks.

Neal led the team with three hits.

Game 2 saw the Hawks trailing early on.

Vanguard opened the top of the first with an RBI single off of Kuper.

But the Hawks answered, and they answered big. An error by the Lions pitcher tied the game. Neal then singled home Samantha Campos for the 2-1 lead. Ariel Rasmusson hit a clutch single scoring two to give SDC a 4-1 lead.

A scoreless fourth and fifth gave way for the Hawks to win via a walk-off, pun intended. Rasmusson drew a bases loaded walk for the ninth run of the game and defeat Vanguard via the mercy-rule.

Kuper, again, picked up the win, increasing her total to 20 on the year, good for 13th in the nation.

The Hawks will face Menlo Saturday morning for a chance to play the Firestorm in the GSAC Championship. If the Hawks win the morning game, they will have to defeat ACU twice since the Firestorm have yet to lose in the tournament in a double-elimination format.

First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.

GSAC Softball Tournament Hub

ATHERTON, Calif. – The SDC softball team split on Day 1 of the GSAC Softball Tournament at Menlo Thursday, winning 8-0 in Game 1 over Hope International before falling 6-2 in Game 2 against host and No. 1-seeded Menlo.

With the split, the Hawks fall into the consolation bracket and will be eliminated with one more loss. SDC will face off against William Jessup at 11:45 a.m. Friday. Menlo advances to the winner's bracket and will face Vanguard who defeated William Jessup earlier in the day.

It took awhile for the Hawks to score in Game 1 but when they did it was in bunches.

Brenda Martinez got things going with a 2 RBI single scoring Samantha Young and Nicole Whitney in the fourth inning for a 2-0 lead. SDC scored another run from an error.

The Hawks exploded for five runs in the fifth to win via the mercy-rule. Whitney hit a sac fly for the first run in the fifth. An error and an RBI single by Victoria Harris gave the Hawks a 6-0 lead. Ariel Rasmusson and Shelbianne Evans also tallied RBI singles to cap the scoring and the game.

SDC starter Kendra Kuper tossed the 5-inning complete game shutout allowing just four hits with six strikeouts. Martinez led the team with 2 RBI.

The Hawks were in uncharted waters in Game 2 falling behind early against the Oaks. SDC hadn't given up a run in the last two games played going back to the last game of the regular season. The Oaks scored two in the first, and one in the second and third.

SDC got on the board and attempted their comeback in the fourth inning with two runs. Rasmusson reached on an error that scored Martinez. Evans then singled home Rasmusson to cut the deficit in half.

Menlo added two in the fifth and was able to hold off the Hawks late in the game.

Cheyanna Contreras started Game 2 only going 1.1 innings with two earned runs. Kendra Kuper threw 4.2 innings of relief giving up the other four runs.

Evans went 3-for-4 in Game 2 totaling five hits on the day.

GSAC Tournament Headquarters

[Softball] 2016 GSAC Softball Tournament Preview

SANTEE, Calif. – The SDC softball has already checked off accomplishments they have obtained this season.

The Hawks look to check their last box by winning the GSAC Tournament and reach the post-season.

Earning the fourth seed in the tournament, the Hawks will face off against the fifth-seeded Royals of Hope International at 9:30 a.m. at Menlo College. SDC took the season series 3-1, with them winning the last game of the series 2-0 thanks to a complete-game shutout from Cheyanna Contreras.

In a double-elimination tournament, teams need to have solid pitching to survive the consolation bracket or power their way through the winner's bracket. The Hawks have two great pitchers who are looking to carry the team to the finals.

Kendra Kuper is the team's workhorse on the mound. She has tallied a 17-10 record with four saves and a 2.74 ERA. She currently ranks seventh in the NAIA in saves and 24th in wins. She also threw a five-inning no-hitter against Westminster back in March and owns the only no-hitter and perfect game in the school's 3-year history.

Not overshadowed by any means, SDC's No. 2 pitcher can bring it as well. Contreras owns a 13-5 record with a 3.44 ERA, good for seventh in the conference. In her last appearance, she held the GSAC Champions, Arizona Christian, to just three hits while striking out two in a five-inning route, leading the Hawks to the win.

The offense for the Hawks is also doing quite well. They rank third in batting average and fourth in RBIs per game.

Leading that charge are three All-GSAC players who happen to be all freshmen; Shelbianne Evans, Victoria Harris, and Jordan Neal.

Evans leads the team in batting average (.444) and on-base percentage (.503). Harris is tops in the GSAC in stolen bases with 21 and leads the team in runs with 39.

Neal in her first season already changed the record book at SDC. She leads the team in home runs with nine (school record) and has hit 12 doubles. She also is tied for the team lead in RBIs with 36 and is second on the team in batting avg. with a .372 clip.

With a win, the Hawks will advance into the winner's bracket and will face tournament host and No. 1 seeded Menlo. That game will commence at 4:15 p.m. Thursday. If the Royals slip by the Hawks, SDC will then face the loser between Vanguard and William Jessup at 2 p.m.

SDC's record vs. each opponent this season:

vs. #1 Menlo: 1-1

vs. #2 Arizona Christian: 2-2

vs. #3 Vanguard: 1-3

vs. #5 Hope International: 3-1

vs. #6 William Jessup: 1-1

Live coverage for all games will be broadcasted free of charge from the Menlo athletic department. The link for the games can be found here at the central hub for the tournament.

[Softball] Cheyanna Contreras Shuts Down Royals as Hawks Split DH

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cheyanna Contreras pitched a complete-game shutout in Game 2 as errors proved too costly as the SDC softball team split with Hope International on Tuesday.

With the split, the Hawks are now 27-12 and 9-7 in conference. The Royals, two games behind SDC in fourth place in the GSAC, are 23-22 and 9-11.

Jordan Neal started the game off perfectly for the Hawks as her 2-run homer gave SDC a 2-0 lead. But four unearned runs in the second gave the Royals a 4-2 lead. After a catcher's interference with two outs in the inning, a bases clearing triple gave HIU their first lead of the game. Another error in the next at bat accounted for all the runs in the inning with the Hawks no playing catch up.

Their deficit grew larger after the fifth inning with the Royals scoring one in the fourth and two in the fifth. SDC didn't score until the top of the seventh when the offensive came alive.

Back to back singles started off the inning, but quickly the Hawks ran into two outs. Shelbianne Evans drove home the only runs in the inning plating two with a single to left. The rally ended with a groundout to the pitcher with two runners left on base.

SDC starter Kendra Kuper was charged with the loss throwing six innings and allowing 11 hits, seven runs, only two earned, with six strikeouts.

Neal launched her ninth home run of the year. Her and Evans led with 2 RBI each.

With all the offense from the Royals in Game 1, Contreras shut HIU down in Game 2. She allowed just three hits, no walks, and a strikeout in seven innings for her 11th win on the season.

All of the runs in the game came in the fourth inning. Samantha Campos started off with a single to the pitcher. Evans answered with a single of her own. An RBI groundout by Neal and an RBI single by Ariel Rasmusson gave SDC the 2-0 lead that would stick the rest of the game.

The Royals didn't collect more than one hit per inning.

The Hawks return to the diamond on Friday as they travel to Saint Katherine for a DH starting at 10 a.m.

COSTA MESA, Calif. – Two extra-inning games didn't go the way the SDC softball team had planned as the No. 14 Hawks were swept by Vanguard on Saturday.

The Lions won 2-1 in nine innings in Game 1 and fell 3-2 in eight innings in Game 2.

With the losses, the Hawks fall to 26-11 overall and 8-6 on GSAC play. The Lions improved to 25-16 on the season and 7-7 in conference.

In Game 1, both teams didn't find the scoreboard in the first seven innings. The Hawks got on board first in the eighth. Ariel Rasmusson hit an RBI sac bunt scoring Brenda Martinez.

Vanguard got on back in the bottom half of the inning on an errant throw by a SDC defender. SDC couldn't find the scoreboard in the ninth but the Lions clinched the win with a fielder's choice bunt, scoring the runner from third.

Kendra Kuper pitched all 8.2 innings allowing tow runs, none earned, while striking out two. Kaylyn Rubalcava led the team with two hits.

The Hawks again scored first in Game 2, this time before the eighth inning.

Nicole Whitney singled to left-center scoring Alex Barajas for the 1-0 lead. Vanguard quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning for the 1-1 tie after two.

Jordan Neal delivered an RBI single for the hawks in the fourth retaking the lead at 2-1. But again, the Lions answered in the bottom half of the inning tying the game.

No runs from either team in the next three innings forced another extra inning affair. Nothing was doing for the Hawks in the top of the eighth but the Lions did.

A sac fly in the bottom of the eighth earned the Lions another walk-off win to secure the sweep.

Cheyana Contreras started the game for the Hawks going four innings allowing six hits, two runs, one earned, and three strikeouts. Kuper was the unfortunate loser in both games, this time in relief.

The Hawks look to get back to winning ways in GSAC play as they host William Jessup on Friday at the Santee Sportsplex.

SANTEE, Calif. – The SDC softball team combined for 24 runs, its highest output this season, in a DH sweep of NCAA Div. The Blue Jays fall to 7-9 and 0-4 in their California road trip.

SDC opened Game 1 in a huge way, scoring six runs. Samantha Campos started it off with a triple down the left-field line scoring Victoria Harris. Campos came around and score an a wild pitch to make it 2-0. Jordan Neal then hit her team-leading eighth homerun, a 2-run shot scoring Shelbianne Evans. Ariel Rasmusson ended the scoring in the first with a homer as well, another 2-run bomb scoring Samantha Young as the team hit around the order.

Kendra Kuper was dialed in, throwing her first no-hitter of the season. She was the first pitcher in SDC history to throw a perfect-game as she did so last year against Antelope Valley in the second game of the year.

Kuper struck out 10 in the five innings and only faced one more batter than the minimum.

Leading 10-0 into the third, Neal hit her second homer of the game, a blast that sailed over the left-field fence.
