[Basketball] Mendez Appointed Head Men's Basketball Coach as Tim Cook Resigns

SANTEE, Calif. – San Diego Christian Men's Basketball Head Coach, Tim Cook, has announced his resignation effective immediately.

Cook leaves SDC after three seasons and will be the new athletic director for the Army/Navy Academy High School in Carlsbad and will be involved in their basketball program. In the three years, the Hawks went 25-48 overall and held a 13-33 conference record.

"It's a career and an opportunity I could not pass up and I can coach my son in two years when he gets into 9th Grade," Cook said about his new job. "I came to SDC with a vision of making the basketball program and athletic department a better place. I believe I impacted lives through Christ and left a very positive imprint on the institution."

SDC Athletic Director, Kyle Ferguson, will miss Cook's upbeat attitude and spirit.

"We are thankful for Coach Cook's contributions to the SDC basketball program and to SDC as a community. Coach Cook's joyful personality and his love for SDC will be missed," Ferguson said. "We know that God has great plans for Tim, and we are excited for him to continue the Lord's work in his new position."

Stepping in to the opening will be Edgar Mendez, who has been the assistant coach at SDC for the past five years.

"I could not be more excited to be entrusted with the Men's Basketball program here at San Diego Christian College," Mendez said. "Getting here has been such a great experience of how God moves and works in our lives. I could not be happier to be part of a better institution, as this has been a dream of mine for so long."

Coach Mendez has coached at every level of basketball. A former Head Coach in the Mexican Professional league, Edgar has also had stints as an Assistant Coach at Scripps Ranch High School, Cuyamaca Community College, as well as El Cajon Valley and his Alma Mater Crawford High School.

"SDC is blessed that we had such a viable candidate already on staff," Ferguson said. "Coach Mendez will continue what Coach Cook had started, and will make strides to place us back into national conversation in men's basketball. Coach Mendez is extremely talented as a coach and a leader. His basketball acumen is excellent, and his love for his players and godly example will guide our student-athletes to become men who seek Christ first."

Coach Mendez will look to implement his teaching methods right away.

" I am looking forward to building the basketball program in a way that reflects my core values and those of SDC," Mendez said. "I will do this by instilling a culture and mindset of hard work. I'll take it one day at a time. We as a coaching staff will be committed to helping our athletes become men of character, who compete every day in the classroom and in the gym. They will leave this program as Men, shaped by God, to go out and make an impact for our Lord Jesus Christ."

(Edgar Mendez becomes new Men's Basketball Coach)
