IRVINE, Calif. – Concordia's hot shooting from the field gave way for the No. 10 Eagles as they defeated the Hawks 80-52 Thursday night.
SDC falls to 5-15 overall and has yet to find a GSAC win this season sitting at 0-12.
In the first, both teams traded 3-pointers as Daniel Nielsen (JR/Grandview, WA) hit his with 18:13 remaining in the half. But Concordia would go on a 21-7 run to increase their lead by 14. Rafael Rodriguez (SR/Santiago, Dominican Republic) hit a jumper with 24 seconds left in the half to bring the score back down to single digits trailing 35-26 at the break.
Both teams traded baskets to start off the second half and Derrick Thompson (SR/San Diego, CA)'s 3-point play brought the game within six as they Hawks trailed 43-37 with 12:51 remaining in the game. 64-45 But then again the Eagles would go on a big run, this time a 21-8 run to extend their lead to 19. The Eagles held their biggest lead with 1:53 remaining in the game, up 30.
The Eagles shot a blistering 53.8 percent from the floor and held the Hawks to under 40 at 36.4 percent. Peter Beale-Wirsing (SR/San Diego, CA) and Thompson both scored nine points in the contest. Beale-Wirsing finished with a team-high six rebounds.
SDC looks to get their first conference win against Vanguard on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
