EL CAJON, Calif. – The Hawks lead early throughout the half but the Eagles of Biola made a second-half comeback to defeat SDC 75-63 Saturday night keeping the Hawks winless in conference play.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 5-14 overall and 0-11 in the GSAC. The Eagles improved to 16-9 on the season and 4-7 in conference.
In front of a rowdy crowd at Grossmont College, the Hawks stormed out to a 15-point lead and prevented the Eagles from scoring a basket in the first eight minutes of play. Daniel Nielsen (JR/Grandview, WA)'s 3-pointer with 12:12 remaining in the half prompted Biola Head Coach Dave Holmquist to call a timeout to stop the bleeding and silence the crowd.
SDC led by as much as 18 in the first with 8:05 remaining. Biola chipped the deficit down to 10 at half with the Hawks leading 39-29 at the break. The Hawks shot lights out at 48 percent from the floor in the first. SDC hit six 3-pointers.
But in the second half, it was all Biola as they quickly erased their deficit and tied the game at 42-42 jumping out on a 13-3 run in the first four minutes of the second.
Derrick Thompson (SR/San Diego, CA)'s free throw with 7:49 was the last lead SDC would hold as Biola grabbed the lead for good at 58-57 with 7:28 remaining in the game.
Thompson led the team with 17 points and grabbed five rebounds with three assists. Nielsen was next with 14 points. Michael Lambert (JR/Irvine, CA) tallied six points and seven boards. Michael Angulo (JR/El Centro, CA) came off the bench and scored eight points.
