SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Hawks used late-inning heroics to take down Cal State San Marcos 8-7 Tuesday as SDC scored four runs in the top of the ninth to take the lead and seal the victory.
With the win, SDC improves to 3-1 while the Cougars fall to 1-4.
Anthony Carrizosa (JR/Corona, CA) pitched two innings in relief to pick up his first win of the year. Carrizosa ran into some trouble in the bottom of the ninth giving up a 2-run homer as CSUSM cut the deficit to one run. He would get the next batter out for the win.
Juan Moreno (NA) started the game only lasting 1.2 innings as he gave up three earned runs and five hits. Zach Koprowski (SR/Tucson, AZ) went the longest for the Hawks with 3.2 innings pitched as Codi Scanlon (SO/Portland, OR) followed him with 1.2 innings of hit-less ball.
Five runs were scored in the first inning with the Hawks taking an early 2-0 lead. Stephen Haviar (JR/San Diego, CA) double home Brock Asher (SR/Aiea, Hawaii) and Joseph Tellez (SR/Bronx, NY) on an 0-2 count with one out. But the Cougars would score three runs in the bottom half with three hits.
CSUSM added another run in the fourth as both teams were held scoreless until the eighth inning.
After a run by the Cougars in the bottom of the eighth, the Hawks made their move. SDC scored four runs on two hits while the Cougar defense committed three errors in the inning.
The Cougars made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth inning homer but it was too little too late.
Haviar led the team with 2 RBI going 2-for-4 from the dish. Bando also added two hits in five at bats.
The Hawks will travel to Santa Barbara this weekend the take on Westmont in a 3-game GSAC series.
