EL CAJON, Calif. - The season opener for the San Diego Christian Baseball team couldn't have gone any better as they defeated William Jessup 8-2 at Grossmont College.
It was the first ever game for the Warriors as they started their baseball program this year.
The Hawks struck as early as the bottom of the first inning as Brock Asher (SR/Aiea, Hawaii) got on base by a throwing error by the WJU shortstop. After being moved over to third base by a double hit by Joseph Tellez (SR/Bronx, NY), the Hawks had runners in scoring position with no one out. Stephen Haviar (JR/San Diego, CA) took advantage of this opportunity and scored Asher with a groundout to shortstop.
After the Warriors were shut down by Gio Ochoa (JR/Indio, CA) in the top second, the Hawks continued to lengthen their lead with four runs in the second, all with two outs.
Shortly afterwards, Warriors Rory Petersen made his way on base after being hit by pitch. After advancing to second, a single to left field was enough to score Petersen and make the score 6-1 in favor of SDC.
Jessup answered back by beginning the top of the fourth with bases loaded, no outs.
Head Coach Landon Burt went to talk with Ochoa about the situation and it paid off. Although the Hawks turned a 6-4-3 double play off of the groundball hit by Rory Petersen, the damage was done as the runner from third scored, making the score 6-2 in favor of SDC. The next pitch from Ochoa resulted in an out as SDC escaped without further damage from WJU.
In the bottom of the fourth, SDC scored yet another run, courtesy of Justin DiStefano. The Hawks also scored in the fifth as Freshman Caeden Barnes (FR/Upland, CA) hit an RBI single to score Nick Quintero increasing their lead to 8-2.
In the sixth inning, Ochoa was relieved by Zach Koprowski (SR/Tucson, AZ). Ochoa went five innings and allowed six hits, two earned runs, with four walks and four strikeouts. Koprowski shut down WJU in the top sixth and kept the Warriors guessing after going three innings allowing just two hits and striking out four.
Haviar led the Hawks with 3 RBI. Barnes drove in two, going 2-for-3 from the dish. Chris Davidson (SO/San Diego, CA) also collected two hits and stole two bases.
SDC takes on WJU again tomorrow at Valhalla High School. First pitch of the double-header starts at 11 a.m.
