EL CAJON, Calif. – A competitive first half later turned sour for the SDC Men's Basketball team as they were defeated by (RV) Vanguard Tuesday night 78-53 in a Golden State Athletic Conference game.
The Lions outscored the Hawks 43-19 in the second half en route to their eleventh win of the season and third in conference. SDC falls to 5-7 overall and 0-4 in GSAC play.
The Hawks took their first lead in the first half as Prince Arceneaux (JR/Los Angeles, CA) made one of his two free throws to give SDC the 25-24 lead.
A Patrick McBride (SR/Thousand Oaks, CA) 3-pointer at the buzzer cut the deficit down to one at the break, 35-34.
SDC shot 44.4 percent from the field in the first.
Vanguard jolted up their defense in the second half forcing 10 SDC turnovers and kept the Hawks off the board for the first seven minutes as they stormed out to 53-34 lead. Deion Davis (FR/San Diego, CA) made a layup to stop the bleeding with 13:04 remaining in the game.
But the Lions were too strong, increasing their lead to 25 late in the second to control the game for the win.
Davis came off the bench with a team-high 12 points as Arceneaux tallied nine. Peter Beale-Wirsing (SR/San Diego, CA) added eight points and seven rebounds.
The Hawks stay home this week as they welcome No. 9 Concordia on Saturday starting at 7:30 p.m. at Grossmont College.
