SAN DIEGO – After playing four consecutive NCAA Div. I opponents, the San Diego Christian Men's Basketball team took their aim at NCAA Div. II Point Loma University Wednesday night.
The ex-GSAC members got the better end of a closely contested battle 64-57 in which there were a total of 15 lead changes and seven tied scores.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 5-6 on the season while Point Loma improves to 8-2.
Patrick McBride (SR/Thousand Oaks, CA) started off the scoring in the game with a bucket 47 seconds in. The Sea Lions went on a 15-7 run in six minutes to take a 6-point lead.
SDC retook the lead as Michael Angulo (JR/El Centro, CA) converted the unconventional 3-point play, with the Hawks up 20-19 with 8:10 remaining. Derrick Thompson (SR/San Diego, CA) converted one of his two free throws with 20 seconds remaining in the half to go into the break down by one, 30-29.
The Hawks were lead by 12 points coming off the bench and 10 points in the paint.
In the second half, Daniel Nielsen (JR/Grandview, WA) hit a trey to give SDC a 3-point lead with 17:22 remaining in the game.
The lead stopped changing for a while after Marek Klassen made a layup for the Sea Lions at the 13:22 mark giving them a 42-40 lead. PLNU ran up their score to a half-best seven points before SDC started their comeback.
Nielsen scored five quick points for the Hawks in an 8-0 run with 3:30 left to go. A Deion Davis (FR/San Diego, CA) 3-pointer with 1:33 gave SDC a 1-point lead.
But that was all the Hawks would muster as the Sea Lions scored eight straight points to secure the win.
The Hawks shot 41 percent from the floor but were held to 5-of-17 from beyond the arc. They made 16 points from the charity stripe out of 20 attempts.
Nielsen led the Hawks with 12 points. Peter Beale-Wirsing (SR/San Diego, CA) was next with nine grabbing six rebounds.
SDC will host reigning NAIA National Champion Vanguard University as they resume conference play Jan. 6 at Grossmont College starting at 7:30 p.m.
