EL CAJON, Calif. – Playing their second consecutive GSAC game against a ranked opponent, the Hawks failed to capitalize, this time against No. 3 Hope International Saturday night, falling 69-55.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 4-5 on the season and 0-3 in conference. The Royals improve to 9-0 overall and 2-0 in GSAC play.
The game started off as an offensive struggle from both teams. The Royals did run out to a 11-0 lead but it took them eight minutes to score the points. Michael Angulo (JR/El Centro, CA) of the Hawks scored the first basket with 11:47 remaining in the half. He added another bucket quickly after as the offense started rolling for both teams.
Trailing 33-11 with just over a minute remaining in the half, the Hawks closed out with a 6-0 run before the break. Rafael Rodriguez (SR/Santiago, Dominican Republic) tallied five points of the six including a contested 3-pointer assisted by Prince Arceneaux (JR/Los Angeles, CA).
SDC shot just 7-of-25 from the field in the first.
Late in the second half, the Hawks showed some fight cutting the deficit to 13 points.
Daniel Nielsen (JR/Grandview, WA) scored the first four points in SDC's 9-0 run. Peter Beale-Wirsing (SR/San Diego, CA) added free throws to make the score 66-53 in favor of HIU before the Royals closed out the victory.
Beale-Wirsing led the Hawks with 16 points and he added five rebounds and a block. Rodriguez tallied 13 points on 5-of-15 shooting with two steals. Nielsen was last in double figures with 12.
SDC will host West Coast Baptist on Tuesday in their next game. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
