LA MIRADA, Calif. – After a back and forth first half, the second half didn't disappoint as the San Diego Christian Men's Basketball team fought to the last second erasing an 18-point deficit but was later defeated by Biola 61-58 Tuesday night.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 4-3 on the season and 0-1 in GSAC play. The Eagles improved to 10-1 overall and 1-0 in conference.
Rafael Rodriguez scored the first six points for the Hawks but found themselves down 8-6 just four minutes in. Peter Beale-Wirsing hit a trey to give the Hawks a 9-8 lead with 15 minutes left in the half. A steal by Prince Arceneaux led to a fast-break layup by Deion Davis to give SDC their biggest lead of the game at 20-16. The Eagles went on a 13-4 run to end the half and lead 29-24 at the break.
After the Eagles stormed out with 13 unanswered points to start the second half, the Hawks came storming back with a 20-7 run ended by a 3-point play from Mark Eden and a jumper by Arceneaux to bring the deficit down to five with SDC trailing 49-44.
The Hawks kept the pressure and tied the game at 58-58 with 1:29 remaining in the game as Derrick Thompson made a fast-break layup assisted by Beale-Wirsing. Arceneaux converted a 3-point play of his own to tie it up.
In the last 1:29, the Eagles scored three points from a free throw and a step back jumper to seal the deal for Biola.
Thompson's last second trey hit the back iron and bounced out.
Eden and Arceneaux both had 11 points to lead the Hawks. Rodriguez added 10. Beale-Wirsing grabbed eight boards with five points. SDC shot 36.7 from the field including 39 percent from beyond the arc. The Hawks turned the ball over a season-low seven times and forced 15 Eagles turnovers. BU was a crisp 50 percent from the floor.
SDC will host Arizona Christian on Saturday at Point Loma University. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
