CLAREMONT, Calif. – After flirting with the possibility to beat a NCAA Div. I over the weekend, the SDC Men's Basketball team was defeated by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, NCAA Div. III, 69-53 Wednesday night for their first loss of the season.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 3-1 while the Stags improve to 2-1.
Peter Beale-Wirsing followed up his great performance against Santa Clara scoring 19 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Rafael Rodriguez was the only other SDC player in double figures scoring 10 points with two assists.
The Hawks never led in the game but were tied in the early going.
Beale-Wirsing made a jumper to tie the game at 4-4 with 17:03 remaining in the first. Ten minutes later, the Stags stretch out their lead to 11 points with a 3-pointer by Jack Grodahl with 7:10 to go before halftime. CMS's lead would get as much as 16 in the half as the Stags went into the locker room with an 11 point lead, 34-23.
To start the second half, Beale-Wirsing and Rodriguez helped chipped the deficit down to six. The Hawks scored in consecutive possessions while forcing a Stags turnover. Rodriguez stripped the ball away from a CMS player and went coast to coast for the layup cutting the lead down to five, but that's the closest SDC would get.
The Stags would lead by as much as 18 points by the 6:23 mark remaining in the game.
SDC shot 38.6 percent from the floor and was 5-of-18 shooting from beyond the arc. The Stags shot a crisp 64.3 percent going 27-42 from the floor and 5-of-8 from deep. CMS outrebounded the Hawks 34-18 on the night.
The Hawks return to their NCAA Div. I slate traveling to Loyola Marymount on Sunday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
