MERCERD, Calif. – Trailing 38-30 at the half, the SDC Men's Basketball team put things together in the second scoring 55 points en route to their third straight win of the season, as the Hawks defeated UC Merced 85-56 Friday night.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 3-0, while the Bobcats fall to 0-5.
Daniel Nielsen scored a game-high 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.
SDC finish the game 50 percent from the field and forced 17 turnovers. The Hawks held the Bobcats to 30.7 percent from the field.
The Hawks got out to a terrific start four minutes into the game. Prince Arceneaux made a jumper to give SDC an early 8-0 lead. The Bobcats grabbed their first lead of the game at 23-21 and finished the half on a 14-4 run in the last 4:14.
After the ending the half on a sour note, SDC was clicking on all cylinders scoring the first 13 of the second half to take a 43-38 lead. After a 3-pointer by UC Merced, the Hawks scored 16 unanswered points completing the 29-3 run in 10 minutes of the second.
SDC's defense allowed just 18 points in the second half and held UC Merced to under 20 percent from the floor.
The Hawks will travel to Santa Clara University to face their second NCAA Div. I team on the season. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
