EL CAJON, Calif. – The Men's Basketball team scored 44 points in the second half and erased a four point first half deficit to win their second game in a row to start the season Friday night, 70-55, against Northwest University.
The Hawks start the season 2-0 for the first time since the 2006-07 season. The loss is the first on the season for the Eagles.
Mark Eden grabbed the first lead of the game, 14-12, for the Hawks with a 3-pointer with 9:38 left in the half. Derrick Thompson converted on two free throws to give the Hawks their last lead of the first half 23-22. The Eagles ended the half on an 8-3 run.
Northwest's lead grew to its highest of the game at seven with 15:03 remaining in the game. CJ Carter hit 1-of-2 free throws to give the Eagles a 37-30 lead. Thompson made a layup with 11:44 left in the game as SDC grabbed the 40-39 lead, using a 10-2 run.
With the score tied 43-43, SDC went on its biggest run of the game, 10-0, to blow the game open. Rafael Rodriguez contributed to five of those points. Eden hit another triple and Daniel Nielsen made his layup attempt.
Four starters finished in double figures for the Hawks. Trevor English and Rodriguez tallied 15 apiece. Peter Beale-Wirsing added 13 points and nine rebounds. Thompson finished with a team-high six assists.
The Hawks forced 15 turnovers on six steals while only giving up the ball a season-low seven times.
SDC will take a week off before their next game against UC Merced with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
