SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Joey Aquino was at it again.

A day after recording a save and helping the Hawks advance to the NAIA Opening Round Championship game, the senior threw a complete game shutout as San Diego Christian defeated the University of British Columbia 2-0 to advance to the 58th annual Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series in Lewiston, Idaho.

The Hawks swept the Opening Round Tournament outscoring their opponents 16-3 for their first opening round championship title and will appear in their first NAIA World Series tournament on May 23-30.

Aquino threw 125 pitches scattering six hits and a walk while striking out seven. He retired the last three batters in order to capture the title.

Jeff Lusardi stayed red-hot in the opening round going 2-for-3 with his second homer in the tournament.

SDC scored a run in the third to take a 1-0 lead. Cade Gotta singled through the right side scoring Jacob Rogers. Lusardi capped the scoring in the sixth with his home run.

Gotta, Peter Hoyt, and Lusardi all registered two hits. The Hawks improved to 42-18 on the season, increasing their school record of wins in a season. The Thunderbirds fell to 35-13 as the fifth seed was eliminated with the loss.

San Diego Christian will have to wait for their seed in the 10-team World Series. After all the opening round winners are announced, each team will be re-seeded 1-10.
