SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Joey Aquino was at it again.
A day after recording a save and helping the Hawks advance to the NAIA Opening Round Championship game, the senior threw a complete game shutout as San Diego Christian defeated the University of British Columbia 2-0 to advance to the 58th annual Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series in Lewiston, Idaho.
The Hawks swept the Opening Round Tournament outscoring their opponents 16-3 for their first opening round championship title and will appear in their first NAIA World Series tournament on May 23-30.
Aquino threw 125 pitches scattering six hits and a walk while striking out seven. He retired the last three batters in order to capture the title.
Jeff Lusardi stayed red-hot in the opening round going 2-for-3 with his second homer in the tournament.
Gotta, Peter Hoyt, and Lusardi all registered two hits. The Hawks improved to 42-18 on the season, increasing their school record of wins in a season. The Thunderbirds fell to 35-13 as the fifth seed was eliminated with the loss.
San Diego Christian will have to wait for their seed in the 10-team World Series. After all the opening round winners are announced, each team will be re-seeded 1-10.
