SANTEE, Calif. –After winning the GSAC regular season and reaching the title game of the GSAC Conference Tournament, the Hawks earned a No. 1 seed in the Santa Clarita Bracket in the NAIA Opening Round Tournament.
SDC finished the season with a record of 39-18 and will have to wait to see their first opponent in a bracket dominated by GSAC schools. The Hawks obtained the first At-large bid out of 14.
The Master's College earned a No. 2 seed and will be the hosts of the tournament finishing the season at 37-16. The Mustangs failed to win a game in the conference tournament losing to Vanguard and eventual winner Westmont all in the first day of competition.
Coming in at a No. 3 seed is Davenport (Mich.) University. The Panthers won the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference regular season and conference tournament. They enter the Opening Round Tournament with a 41-15 record.
Golden State Athletic Conference foe Vanguard slides into the No. 4 seed. The Lions enter the tournament at 31-21 and as an At-large team. Vanguard played both SDC and TMC in the conference tournament. The Lions defeated the hosts, The Master's College, 1-0 in 11 innings before falling to SDC the day after, 22-9.
And capping the teams off with the No. 5 seed is British Colombia with a 32-11 record. A member of the Association of Independent Institutions, the Thunderbirds won the NAIA Group West Championship to earn a birth in the Opening Round.
The Opening Round is a double elimination format from May 12-15. The Hawks, as the No. 1 seed, will have to wait to play the winner of No. 4 Vanguard and No. 5 British Columbia, while The Master's, as the 2-seed, will play No. 3-seeded Davenport (Mich).
