LA MIRADA, Calif. – Heading into Friday's game against Biola, the Hawks held a slim one game lead over The Master's College with three games to play.
The Eagles made things more difficult for SDC, who are vying for their first regular season title in school history, as they defeated the Hawks 5-4 thanks to a walk-off 2-run homer.
Garrett Picha pitched a complete game for the Eagles improving to 6-5 on the season. He allowed 10 hits and four runs while striking out three. Bunnell was charged with the loss as he gave up the walk-off homer. He pitched two innings of relief after taking the ball from SDC starter Mark Vasquez. Bunnell let up the two runs on four hits. Vasquez threw 6.1 innings allowing 10 hits and struck out one.
Chad Erickson doubled home Cade Gotta to start off the game as the Hawks collected a run on two hits from the first two hitters. Jeff Lusardi kept it going with an RBI single for himself as SDC led 2-0 in the first. The Eagles answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit in half.
Each team scored a run in the fourth but Biola tied it up in the seventh with a run on three hits. The Hawks tallied a run in the eighth to take the lead again as Peter Hoyt tripled and scored Gilbert Viera for a 4-3 advantage. But Boone Farrington clubbed his third homer of the season to upset SDC. He finished 2-for-4 on the day with 3 RBI.
Gotta, Viera, and Hoyt all had two hits.
With the loss, the Hawks are now tied with The Master's College in first place in the GSAC standings as they rolled Westmont 13-3. SDC falls to 35-16 overall and 22-12 in conference. The Eagles improve to 15-37 overall and 11-23 in GSAC play.
The Hawks must match The Master's to claim at least a share of the regular season title. If the Hawks win both games against Biola tomorrow and the Mustangs lose at least one game between the Warriors, SDC will win the GSAC outright. Westmont, Vanguard, and Concordia are two games back from SDC and The Master's. All five teams still have a shot of attaining at least a share of the title.
