IRVINE, Calif. – The bats were alive and well Wednesday for the No. 5-ranked Hawks as SDC traveled to Concordia and beat the No. 16 Eagles 15-1.
The Hawks tallied 21 hits en route to their 35th win of the season to improve to 35-13 overall and 22-9 in GSAC play. The Eagles fall to 31-15 overall and 18-13 in conference. Also with the win, SDC extends their league atop of the GSAC standings to two games in front of The Master's College. Westmont, Vanguard, and Concordia are all four games behind. With five games to play.
Mark Vasquez pitched efficiently in 6.2 innings allowing eight hits, one run, and striking out five for his seventh win on the season. Steven Bunnell worked 2.1 innings of relief to close out the game.
With all the runs, the Hawks scored runs in just four of the nine innings. SDC scored five runs in the top of the first and second to jump to an early 10-0 lead. The Hawks scored four in the fourth and one in the ninth.
Jeff Lusardi led the Hawks with five hits and scored two runs. Chad Erickson, Christian Johnson, and Gilbert Viera all had three hits. Erickson, Dawson Jones, Peter Hoyt, and Jacob Rogers each tallied 2 RBI.
SDC is back in play tomorrow against the Eagles for a double header. If the Hawks sweep Concordia, they would earn at least a share of the GSAC Regular Season title. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
