EL CAJON, Calif. – After allowing Bethesda University to score two runs late in the game, Gilbert Viera silenced the Flames with a walk-off single in the bottom of the tenth inning for a 5-4 win Tuesday.
Viera singled home Chad Erickson as the No. 6 Hawks improved to 32-12 on the season. Bethesda now sits at 11-26.
In the top of the ninth, Bobby Moreno hit a dribbler to third as Dawson Jones came home with the throw to get the tying runner. His throw was a little high and the Flames forced extra innings. Bethesda also scored a run in the top of the eighth.
Erickson led off the inning with a walk and a stolen base to move into scoring position with one out. Jones was hit by a pitch and KC Lee drew a walk to load the bases for Viera. He swung on a 1-2 pitch and hit a hard grounder through the right side of the infield as Erickson trotted home.
Viera finished the game going 4-for-5 with 2 RBI.
Calvin Chambers earned his sixth win of the season as he worked the tenth inning. Codi Scanlon started the game lasting just three innings before freshman Chris Davidson went six innings of relief. He gave up two runs on three hits.
Erickson and Taylor Eichhorst both hit solo homers off of Flames starter Juan Gil.
Gil threw seven innings and allowed four runs striking out three.
The Hawks will host No. 14 ranked Vanguard for a three game series on Friday and Saturday. SDC leads the conference by two games ahead of the Lions. Friday's game is at 3 p.m. at Grossmont College and Saturday's double header is at the old campus with first pitch starting at noon.
