PHOENIX—David Johnson hurled seven innings and Steven Bunnel picked up the 2-inning save Friday as the Hawks defeated the Firestorm 4-3 to jump back into first place in the GSAC standings.
With the win, the No. 8 ranked Hawks improve to 29-11 overall and 17-8 in conference. Arizona Christian falls to 11-22 overall and 5-20 in GSAC play.
Johnson improved to 4-3 on the season tossing the seven innings allowing six hits three runs, two earned, and striking out two.
Jeff Lusardi got the scoring going in the top of the first as his single drove home Cade Gotta after he reached on a single to lead off the game. Taylor Eichhorst knocked an RBI single before Chad Erickson stole home on a double steal to bring the score to 3-0 in favor of the Hawks after the top half of the inning.
In the fourth inning, Christian Johnson grounded out the pitcher but brought home pinch runner Chris Gonzalez as the Hawks led 4-1. The Firestorm would score two in the bottom of the fourth but SDC held on for the win.
Erickson led the Hawks with three hits in four plate appearances. Firestorm's Tommy Lay pitched a complete game in the loss falling to 2-5. Bunnell picked up his third save on the season.
These two teams will battle it out tomorrow in a double header. First pitch is 11 a.m. PST.
In other GSAC games, No. 24 Vanguard topped No. 14 The Master's College, 3-2 as the Lions jumped into third place, one game behind the Hawks. Westmont defeated No. 6 Concordia, 6-3 to give the Hawks a one game lead atop the GSAC standings.
