SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Meeting for the last time of the year, the No. 5 ranked Hawks split Saturday's double header with Cal State San Marcos.
San Diego Christian took Game 1 8-2 as Gabriel Hemmer pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts to improve to 7-1 on the season. The Cougars claimed victory in Game 2 shutting out the Hawks 3-0.
With the split, the Hawks sit at 27-11 overall, while the Cougars rest at 16-14.
Cade Gotta and Jeff Lusardi supplied the power for the Hawks in Game 1. Gotta delivered a 3-run homer in the top of the second to give SDC a 4-0 lead. Lusardi's solo homer came in the fifth as he led off the inning.
Eight runs were more than enough for Hemmer as he retired the Cougars with the bases loaded in the ninth. Cal State San Marcos left 10 runners on base in the game, stranding the bases loaded twice.
Gotta finished Game 1 going 3-for-4 with the homer and two stolen bases. Lusardi was 2-for-4 and scored two runs.
The offense was shut down in the second game as Kyle Montiel pitched a 7-inning complete game allowing just four hits and a walk while striking out five.
David Johnson was given the loss for the Hawks as he pitched six innings, allowing three runs six hits and striking out four. The Cougars scored two in the fourth and one in the fifth off Johnson.
The Hawks will travel to Point Loma to complete a game that was called tied 5-5 in the 13th inning due to darkness on Tuesday. Immediately following the completion of that game, SDC and Point Loma will square off for a 9-inning game.
SDC returns to GSAC play as they hit the road to Phoenix for a 3-game series.
