SANTEE, Calif. – When the NAIA Top 25 Preseason poll came out back in Nov. 12, the San Diego Christian baseball team earned its first ever ranking in school history, clocking in at No. 22.
After an impressive start to the season, which includes wins over then-No. 12 The Master's College and then-No. 16 Cal State San Marcos, the Hawks climbed 17 spots in the polls at No. 5 in the nation.
The No. 5 ranking is the best in school history as they earned 487 total points to the tune of a 25-10 record. The top four are, in order, Faulkner (Ala.), Oklahoma Baptist, Lewis-Clark State (Idaho), and Missouri Baptist.
"The national recognition is a byproduct of a lot of hard work, tremendous talent and the favor of God," Assistant coach Mike Lusardi said. "Words could never describe what a Top-5 ranking means to this program. It puts us on the map and it not only creates excitement in our program but hopefully on our campus as well. It allows us to recruit players that we never could recruit in the past."
Three other GSAC teams find themselves ranked in the current Top 25 Poll. The Master's jumped five spots into the Top 10 at No. 7. Concordia dropped three slots and now sits at No. 12. Vanguard checks in at No. 25 after not receiving a vote in the preseason poll. Fellow GSAC member Westmont received seven points.
"This team has the ingredients to go all the way to the national championships," Lusardi said. "But the hard part is that each of the boys know in their heart that they have to go out and earn that No. 5 ranking every day at practice and in each game."
SDC will travel to Cal Sate San Marcos this weekend as they exit GSAC play momentarily for a game on Friday and double header on Saturday.
The Hawks sit tied in first in the conference standings with The Master's College. Concordia University is a 1/2 game back and the Vanguard Lions are 1.5 from first.
