SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – A day after leaping No. 12 The Master's College for first place in the GSAC standings, the No. 22 San Diego Christian baseball team split the double header on Saturday to stay a 1/2 game ahead of the Mustangs.
The Hawks took Game 1 7-1 and dropped Game 2 4-2 against the defending GSAC champions.
With the split, SDC sits at 25-9 overall and 16-7 in GSAC play. The Master's College is now 26-8 overall and 16-8 in conference play.
Gabriel Hemmer earned the win pitching a complete-game four hitter. He struck out nine Mustangs and allowed just an earned run and one walk.
Six different Hawks collected an RBI in the game.
The scoring started in the top of the second as the Hawks poured in three runs. Christian Johnson doubled down the left field line and scored Richard Aguirre to end the scoring in the inning. Johnson finished with two hits, tying Stowers for a team-high.
The Hawks scored two in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead as Stowers singled home Gotta. SDC added a run in the fifth and seventh for their seven runs to take Game 1.
In Game 2, the Hawks outhit the Mustangs but left eight runners on base. SDC scored two runs on seven hits but The Master's scored four runs on three hits.
The Mustangs scored the first four runs of the games. Joshua Swartz singled home two Mustangs off of SDC starter David Johnson. Johnson lasted 4.1 innings allowing the four runs, all earned, and struck out one with three walks.
The Master's added a run in the third and a run in the fifth.
SDC tallied their two runs in the top of the sixth. Gilbert Viera grounded out but scored Taylor Eichhorst to trail 4-1. Stowers delivered an RBI single a batter later that scored Peter Hoyt to end the scoring in the game.
Tucker Richardson earned the win throwing five innings allowing three hits and no runs while striking out three.
