COSTA MESA, Calif. – Mark Vasquez pitched eight innings in defeat as the Lions of Vanguard University took Game 1 of the 3-game series on Friday 6-5.
Vasquez allowed seven hits and six runs, four earned, while striking out two in his second defeat of the season.
Marshall McKinnon went seven innings for the Lions earning his second win to keep his record spotless at 2-0. McKinnon allowed four runs, three earned and struck out three.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 14-4 overall and 7-3 in GSAC play. Vanguard improves to 10-6 and 5-5 respectively.
Vanguard was on the board first as they scored three runs in the second inning. The Lions collected three runs on two hits and a SDC error. Defense was an issue for the Hawks in the third as they committed two more errors to let up another Lions run.
Taylor Eichhorst hit a double to left field, scoring Chad Erickson for SDC's first run of the game. Peter Hoyt grounded out to second but scored Jeff Lusardi from third to give the Hawks two runs to trail 4-2 after the top of the fourth.
A two RBI single from Nick Rodda in the bottom of the inning answered the two runs scored by the Hawks to increase the lead back to four, 6-2.
The Hawks put a valiant effort in the top of the ninth to try the comeback.
Gotta led the inning with a single to right followed by an Erickson double. Lusardi hit a sac fly to left to score Gotta and make it a one run game. But Eddie Rivera was able to get the next two batters to secure the victory for his first save of the season.
SDC finished the day with nine hits. Gotta, Erickson, and Stowers each had two hits.
These two teams will square off tomorrow for a double header starting at 11 a.m.
