PHOENIX – Down 16 at the half, the Hawks made an impressive comeback and were able to cut the deficit down to just two points with 14 seconds left to put pressure on leading scorer Talib Uqdah.
Uqdah converted on one of two free throws which gave the Hawks an opportunity to tie the game with a 3-pointer but Jhoan Camacho's attempt hit the back of the rim and missed as the Hawks fell 81-78 to the Firestorm Tuesday night.
In their first meeting this season, Arizona Christian's Talib Uqdah shot lights out scoring 27 points while shooting 8-of-11 from the field as the Firestorm survived with a 88-76 victory.
This time the Hawks held the GSAC leader in points per game to just 4-of-12 shooting and 16 points and it was Derek Dickerson for the Hawks who shot well.
Dickerson match Uqdah's 27 points and shot 8-of-13 from the field including 6-of-10 from beyond the arc.
The Hawks fared well out of the gate jumping to a 7-2 lead with 17:34 remaining in the first. But the Firestorm went on a 16-2 run to take an 18-9 lead. The Firestorm kept scoring and brought the lead up to 20 points with 3:31 left before the break. ACU led 48-32 at intermission.
ACU scored the first bucket in the second but the Hawks 11-0 run to get the game in single digits, as the Firestorm's lead was 50-43. ACU brought their lead up to 14 with 6:39 remaining in the game.
Dickerson hit one of his 3s with two minutes left to get the score within five points as ACU led 75-70. Kwaminique Brandon nailed a 3-pointer with 31 seconds left to get the Hawks within three.
But the Firestorm was able to hold off for the win.
With the win, the Firestorm improve to 20-6 and 6-5 in GSAC play. SDC falls to 8-12 and 4-7 in conference.
The Hawks will travel to The Master's College on Saturday tipping off at 7:30 p.m.
