EL CAJON, Calif. – Back on Jan. 21, the Hawks held on to beat a charging Biola Eagles team that wouldn't go away. SDC walked away with a 3-point win, 73-70, and their second victory in conference play.
Less than a month later, it was quite the same with the two teams.
Rafael Rodriguez hit four clutch free throws to survive a late come back bid by the Eagles as the Hawks held on to win yet again 73-70 Tuesday night for the season sweep.
SDC held an 8-point lead with 58 seconds to play but Biola found ways to dwindle the advantage down to one point with 23 seconds left. Dakari Archer was fouled as he hit a 3-pointer and converted on a rare 4-point play. Archer made the last eight points for Biola as he was doing his part to hope for a share of the lead.
But Rodriguez stepped up and shut the door to secure the victory. He scored a game-high 21 points as the Hawks improved to 8-10 and 4-5 in GSAC play. Biola falls to 15-10 and 5-4 in conference.
The Hawks led for much of the first half. Their biggest deficit in the half was three points when Biola was up 11-8 with 15:19 remaining in the half. Rodriguez made a layup to take the led outright with 11:30 remaining.
SDC led at the break by two, 31-29.
Biola came out firing in the second opening the half on a 13-4 run to take a seven point lead with 14:33 remaining.
Derek Dickerson hit a 3-pointer to tie it at 51 apiece with 8:24 left. He later hit another triple to give the Hawks a one point lead, 54-53. Dickerson made three consecutive 3-point attempts in the span of one minute and 20 seconds.
Tied up at 61 all, Trevor English made a jumper to give the Hawks a two point lead. SDC would lead the rest of the way for the win. Dickerson chipped in 17 points. English finished with 12 points and six rebounds. Michael Lambert was also in double figures with 14.
The Hawks shot 45.9 percent from the field, two points higher than Biola who shot 43.9. SDC made 10-of-24 3-point attempts finishing at 41.7 percent. The Eagles were just 18.8 percent and 3-of-16 from deep.
SDC will welcome the No. 22-ranked Concordia University Saturday at the Ryan Athletic Center tipping off at 7:30 p.m.
