EL CAJON, Calif. – Being up by as much as 11 points in the first half, the San Diego Christian College men's basketball team couldn't seal the deal as the Mustangs of The Master's College came back to top the Hawks 77-67 Saturday night in a GSAC tilt.
Jhoan Camacho hit a jumper to give SDC the 11 points lead, 27-16. But the Mustangs went on a 23-12 run to close out the half tying the score at halftime 39-39.
SDC jumped out to a 55-50 lead in the first eight minutes of the second half. Derek Dickerson converted a 3-pointer. Dickerson finished with 11 points. After The Master's College went on a short run to take the lead, Rafael Rodriguez added a layup giving the Hawks a 59-58 lead with 8:24 remaining. Rodriguez scored a team-high 18 points. Michael Lambert added 15 points and 12 rebounds. Trevor English was also in double figures with 15.
But TMC retook the lead and didn't let it go this time scoring the last seven points of the game.
Derrick Fain led all scorers with a game-high 20 points. Bernard Ireland added 13 points and three rebounds. Zach Stalin came off the bench and scored 11 points grabbing seven rebounds.
Both team shot in the high forties. The Mustangs were a bucket better shooting 47.5 percent and hitting 50 percent of their 3-pointers. The Hawks shot 45.3 from the floor and just 27.6 percent from deep. SDC only shot four free throws compared to the Mustangs' 13.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 6-9 overall and 2-4 in GSAC play. TMC improves to 14-7 and 2-4 in conference.
The Hawks travel in their next game to Fullerton to take on Hope International University. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
