EL CAJON, Calif. – The Hawks baseball team split the double-header between The Master's College after an offensive explosion in Game 1 was erased in Game 2 as SDC won the first game 11-8 but lost the second 3-1 Saturday.
Gabriel Hemmer toed the mound in Game 1 as he put on a performance going 7.2 innings while striking out 10 in the win moving his record to 2-0 on the season. He allowed 10 hits and four earned runs.
The Mustangs got to Hemmer early, however. Ryan Shackelford doubled home Jonathan Popadics to give TMC the 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
SDC answered with three runs in the bottom half. Jeff Lusardi doubled which brought home Chad Erickson and Cade Gotta. Lusardi later scored via a Gilbert Vierra groundout as the Hawks led 3-1 after one.
Lusardi came through again in the bottom of the third. He sailed a 1-0 pitch over the right field fence for a 3-run homer, his first of the season. The Hawks scored another run in the inning and added four in the bottom of the fifth to take a huge 11-1 lead.
But the Master's didn't go down easily as Steve Karkenny hit a 2-run shot over the left field fence. The Mustangs would later score five more unanswered runs to bring the score within three but Calvin Chambers was able to shut it down in the ninth. TMC was able to score two runs in the ninth but Chambers buckled down to retire the Mustangs to end Game 1.
Michael Stowers went 3-for-4 with a run. Lusardi had a big game going 2-for-4 with 5 RBI and two runs scored. Dalton Thompson was credited for his first loss of the season as he lasted just 2.1 innings giving up seven runs.
Game 2 saw a dominant performance for Mustang's pitcher Tucker Richardson. At one point in the game, Richardson retired 15 straight Hawk hitters. He went the distance in Game 2 allowing just three hits, one run and striking out nine in seven innings.
The Master's got to Joey Aquino early as they scored a run to start off the game. Karkenny singled up the middle to bring home Popadics.
Popadics later in the third hit a solo homerun as TMC held a 2-0 lead after three complete innings.
The Hawks were shutout almost the entire game before Lusardi hit a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh with two outs for his second homer of the day.
But the rally fell short as TMC captured the rubber match win.
Aquino went 5.2 innings allowing six hits and two runs while striking out seven. Jimmy Shaw came in relief and tossed 1.1 innings allowing a run and three hits.
With the 1-1 split, the Hawks are now 8-2 overall and 4-2 in conference play. The Mustangs were dealt their first loss of the season but now sit at 9-1 and 5-1 in GSAC competitions.
The Hawks will get a week before they host No. 16 Cal State San Marcos next Saturday for two games. First Pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
