SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – In the GSAC opener for the No. 22 ranked Hawks, Mark Vasquez threw a 10-inning complete game to take Game 1 of the three game series Friday 8-3 against Westmont College.
Vasquez went the distance striking out seven allowing six hits and three earned runs.
With the win, SDC improves to 3-0 and 1-0 in GSAC play. Westmont falls for the first time this season and falls to 2-1 and 0-1 in conference.
The 5-run tenth inning was jump-started by a Chad Erickson triple. Cade Gotta and Peter Hoyt scored on the play. Erickson would score from a sac fly by Taylor Eichhorst on the next play. The Hawks capitalized on two Warrior errors for the last two runs in the inning.
Gotta stayed red hot from the plate going 3-for-5 with a solo homerun to lead of the game, his second of the season. Both of his homeruns this season have been leadoff fashion and the first play of the game. Gotta also showed some wheels on the bases with three stolen bases.
Erickson was 3-for-4 scoring three runs and the 2 RBI from the triple. Erickson also stole two bases.
Leading 2-0 after the first inning, Westmont got on the board in the bottom half of the fifth scoring three runs to take the 3-2 lead. Vasquez struck out the first batter but had trouble with the others. A walk and two singles later gave the Warriors their first run in the game. An RBI double by Steven Pollex tied the game at two apiece. A sacrifice foul out to left ultimately gave Westmont the edge.
SDC later tied the game in the seventh after an Eichhorst double scored Erickson from first.
After Vasquez allowed a base hit in the tenth, the Hawks turned a game-ending double play to secure the win. He hadn't allowed a hit from innings six through nine. In the 3-inning streak, Vasquez struck out four and only walked one batter for his first win on the season.
The Hawks continue GSAC play tomorrow with a double header against Westmont. First pitch is scheduled for 11 am.
