EL CAJON, Calif. – The Men's basketball team found themselves down by as much 18 points in the first half and 17 points in the second.
Each time, Tim Cook's squad made a comeback to get back into the game.
But the Hawks were unable to make a complete comeback as they fell to Thompson Rivers (CANADA) 84-78 Tuesday night at the Ryan Athletic Center.
With the loss, SDC falls to 5-3 on the season. The Wolfpack were playing the game as an exhibition. The neighbors up north played against fellow NAIA foe and No. 8 team in the nation Cal State San Marcos yesterday 79-70.
The first deficit the Hawks came back from was right out of the gate. Thompson Rivers rolled out to a 19-1 lead. Jhoan Camacho made a jumper to give the Hawks the first field goal of the game with 14:48 remaining in the half.
SDC would then make a charge and go on a 22-5 run to get within one point at the 4:21 left in the period. Rafael Rodriguez scored 12 of the 22 points scored in the run including three 3-pointers. He finished with a team-high 24 points off the bench. Rodriguez went 6-of-10 from 3-point land. Trevor English was next with 14 points. Derek Dickerson added 13 points and Kwaminique added a double-double with 10 points and 12 assists.
TRU's Josh Wolfram had something to say about SDC's run and helped the Wolfpack jump back to a double-digit lead of 13. He made four 3-pointers in the stretch and finished with a game-high 34 points and was a spotless 8-of-8 from beyond the arc.
The Wolfpack headed into the locker room with a 43-29 halftime lead.
Wolfram hit one of his 3-pointers with 14:28 left in the game for a 17-point lead as the Wolfpack led 59-42.
Then SDC went on another one of their runs. Rodriguez scored nine points in a 15-2 run to get within four points with 9:21 remaining in the game. But Thompson Rivers would not let the Hawks get within four points in the remainder of the game as they rolled to the win.
The Hawks finished shooting 36.8 percent from the floor and 14-of-36 from 3-point range. The Wolfpack shot a solid 49.1 percent from the field including 61.9 (13-of-21) from beyond the arc.
TRU dominated down low with a 48-39 rebounding advantage edge. The Hawks did force 17 turnovers and only turned the ball over nine times.
SDC will travel to Irvine to play University of California-Irvine Jan. 4 in the last exhibition game of the season. Tip off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
