OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- The San Diego Christian Men's basketball team couldn't overcome a record-setting performance from No. 8 ranked Cal State San Marcos as the Hawks fell 113-80 Friday night.
The 113 points the Cougars scored was a school record and pushed their record to 12-1. The loss makes the Hawks 3-4 on the season.
The Cougars shot an effective 52.1 percent from the floor and forced 18 SDC turnovers. The Hawks shot 43.9 percent and 27.6 percent from beyond the arc. Rafael Rodriguez came off the bench to score a team-high 19 points. He was 6-of-12 from the field. Trevor English was next with 16 points. Kwaminique Brandon and Josh Richardson were also in double figures with 15 and 14 respectively.
Derek Dickerson kicked off the scoring in the game with a trey 44 seconds into the contest. The Hawks reached their biggest lead of the game at 14-10 with 13:27 left in the first. Dickerson found an open English for a 3-pointer. The Cougars did make a charge the rest of the half and scored the last six points to go into the break at 46-35.
In the second, the Cougars scored the first 10 points to open their lead to 21 points. Rodriguez hit a 3-pointer with 8:21 remaining in the game to bring the score within 19 points in favor of the Cougars but that is the closest the Hawks would get. De'End Parker scored a game-high 24 points. All five starters for Cal State San Marcos reached double figures.
The Cougars shot a total of 39 foul shots. They hit 71.8 percent of them as they flourished from the charity stripe. Cal State San Marcos also outrebounded the Hawks 47-38.
SDC will take a week off then travel to Logan, Utah to take on their last NCAA Div. I opponent in Utah State on Dec. 28. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
