EL CAJON, Calif. -- Four San Diego Christian starters scored in double figures but it wasn't enough as No. 12 ranked Cal State San Marcos held on for the 87-77 win at the Ryan Athletic Center.
With the loss, SDC falls to 1-3 on the season after competing in five straight NCAA Div. I exhibition games. The Cougars improve to 9-0.
In the back-and-forth contest, the Hawks held a brief 10-9 lead with 14:44 remaining in the first half. English converted the 3-point play the old fashion way to give SDC the advantage. The Cougars would eventually take the lead and be up by as much as seven until Rafael Rodriguez hit a 3-pointer to make it a one point ball game with 9:22 remaining in the half as the Hawks trailed 22-21.
Cal State San Marcos held a six point advantage at the break.
The Cougars built up a strong lead with 11:08 left in the game. Jason Johnson made a layup to increase the Cougar lead to a game-high 12 points as SDC trailed 62-50. The Hawks would go on an 11-5 run as Michael Lambert was good on his layup attempt as the score was 67-61 with 7:22 left in the game. The two teams would trade baskets as Dickerson hit one of his four 3-pointers in the game with 3:06 left to get the tally within five.
But that would be the closest the Hawks would get as the Cougars sealed the win from the charity stripe. Cal State San Marcos's last eight points were from the free throw line.
The Hawks finished shooting 48.4 percent from the floor and 28.6 percent from deep. The Cougars were 30-of-63 from the floor (47.6 percent). They made 22 of their 26 free throw attempts (84.6 percent). The Cougars held a slight advantage in the rebound column edging SDC 37-36. De'End Parker had a game-high 25 points. Malcolm Lennings added 20 for Cal State San Marcos.
The Hawks are back in action 10 days from now as they travel to Lancaster, Calif. to take on West Coast Baptist. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
