SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Christian Hawks Men's basketball team got off to a better start than the one last night against San Diego State.
The Hawks scored the first basket of the game as Jhoan Camacho hit a turn around jumper 49 seconds in. SDC still had the lead at 6-5 as Derek Dickerson hit a field goal with 18:14 remaining in the half.
But the Toreros went on a 36-10 run through most of the half and took control of the half and the game as USD defeated San Diego Christian 82-46 Thursday night.
With the win, USD improves to 5-0 on the season. SDC was playing their fourth exhibition game of the season including three games in as many nights.
SDC finished the half shooting 31 percent including 2-of-14 from deep. USD kept the Hawks from driving in the paint. SDC only attempted one free throw and it was missed. The Toreros dominated in the paint with 30 first half points. SDC only tallied two as they trailed 47-20 at half.
At the start of the second, the Hawks battled to get the score within 24 points, the closest SDC would get all second half. But USD kept knocking down shots and eventually increased their lead to the highest of the game at 38 with 3:15 left in the game.
SDC finished the half shooting just 20 percent from the floor and 26 percent for the game. USD was just over 50 percent in field goals (34-of-67) and a low 13 percent beyond the arc. USD finished with 54 points in the paint.
Thomas Jacobs of USD tallied 14 points and 13 rebounds. The Toreros held a slight 45-38 rebound advantage.
The Hawks get a much needed day off on Friday as they prepare for Northern Arizona University. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be aired on Fox Sports.
Fellow GSAC foe Arizona Christian defeated NAU in an exhibition game earlier this year 92-85.
