REDLANDS, Calif. -- After holding a nine point halftime advantage, the Men's Basketball team couldn't hold serve as the University of Redlands took charge late in the second half and defeated the Hawks 75-67 Tuesday night.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 1-2 on the early season. The Bulldogs improve to 1-2.
Andy Saharan led the scoring in the first half. He tallied 14 points for the Hawks before the break. Saharan finished with a game-high 24.
The Hawks started with a commanding 12-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game. The Bulldogs, however, would score 12 unanswered as well to tie the score. Rodriguez made a jump shot with 2:04 remaining for the Hawks' biggest lead of the game at 16, 42-26. Redlands would score the next seven points to close out the half.
As the second half was underway, SDC still found a way to score and was up as much as 12 after two free throws by Saharan. Trevor English finished with 11 points for SDC and Rafael was next and only other Hawk in double figures with 10. Kwanique Brandon finished with 11 assists and a bucket.
Trailing 62-51, the Bulldogs went on a run to get the game all tied up. A 13-2 run capped by a 3-pointer Ricky Peetz found Redlands tied with SDC 64-64 at the 6:18 mark remaining in the game. The Hawks only scored three more points in the six minutes, while the Bulldogs tallied 11 more points for the eight point victory.
The Hawks struggles were found behind the 3-point line. SDC shot just 29 percent (9-of-31) and 36 percent from the floor.
Four Redlands were in double figures. Alex Rudd led the team with 16 points. Peetz added 13 followed by Eric Radford (11) and Aljosa Bjekovic (10). The Bulldogs finished shooting 39 percent from the floor and 38 from beyond the arc. Redlands was 19-of-28 from the charity stripe, shooting and converting nine more free throws than the Hawks (10-of-19).
SDC won the turnover battle, giving the ball away only 15 times compared to 23 for the Bulldogs.
Up next for SDC is a tough stretch of NCAA Div. I games on the road. They travel down Interstate-8 to play San Diego State tomorrow, University of San Diego on Thursday and Northern Arizona on Saturday. All three games will be aired on Fox Sports.
