COSTA MESA, Calif.—The San Diego Christian College baseball team had its 8-game winning streak snapped at the hands of Vanguard University on Saturday afternoon. The Lions swept the double header, winning game one 4-2 and capturing game two in extra innings, 2-1.
SDCC falls to 29-15 overall and 15-15 in the GSAC. VU moves to 18-25 overall and 11-19 in conference play.
The Hawks struck early in game one, taking a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Alex Mann led the game off with a single through the left side, leading to Chris Gonzalez entering as a courtesy runner for Mann. Jeff Lusardi then advanced Gonzalez to second with a sacrifice bunt, giving way to Chad Erickson who singled, placing runners on the corners. Erickson then stole second base and an errant throw led to Gonzalez scoring. Taylor Eichhorst followed with a single up the middle to bring home Erickson.
The Hawks, who entered having averaged 12 runs per game and nearly 16 hits per game over the past four GSAC contests, were unable to push another run across the plate off of VU starter Travis Thomsen.
The Lions tallied one run in the first, two in the third, and one in the fifth to take the 4-2 advantage.
The Hawks threated in the seventh, loading the bases via two hit batsmen and a walk. However, Thomsen was able to induce a groundout to end the scoring chance.
Tomsen (3-6) tossed 8.0 innings, scattering six hits and allowing the two runs (one earned) while striking out five. Clayton Voetching earned the save, his first of the season.
Game two again saw SDCC take the lead. In the top of the third, Mann singled and advanced two bases on an error by the leftfielder. Gonzalez again was tabbed as the courtesy runner and came home on a wild pitch to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
VU then tied the game with a single run in the bottom of the third.
Neither team could get much going offensively, as SDCC starter Nick Greene and VU starter Scott Simmons kept the opposing bats at bay.
The Lions, however, captured the walk-off win with an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth inning to take the second game, 2-1.
Simmons (6-6) was the victor for VU, throwing all eight innings, allowing six hits and striking out two.
David Johnson (3-2) suffered the loss in relief of Greene. Greene threw 6.0 innings, giving up one run on eight hits and striking out six.
Mann led SDCC offensively, collecting two hits in both games.
The Hawks continue their season hosting Concordia University in a 3-game series starting with a single game on Friday, April 19 and concluding with a double header the following day.
