COSTA MESA, Calif.—The San Diego Christian College baseball team pounded 16 hits and got eight solid innings from Gabriel Hemmer en route to a 13-2 win over Vanguard University on Friday afternoon.
With the win, the Hawks push their winning streak to eight games and stand 29-13 overall and 15-13 in the GSAC. Vanguard falls to 16-25 and 9-19 in conference play.
The Hawks wasted no time getting on the board as Taylor Eichhorst smashed a two-run homerun over the leftfield wall in the top of the first inning to give SDCC a lead they would not relinquish.
The Hawks added a single run in the second when a single by Gilbert Viera brought Cade Gotta home. SDCC pushed across three runs in the third on a sacrifice fly from Peter Hoyt, an RBI single from Gotta, and a Lion error to give the Hawks a 6-0 after three innings.
VU scored a pair of runs on two hits in the sixth off of Hemmer, but the Hawks' righty pitched out of a slight jam to keep the scoring to a minimum.
SDCC put the game out of reach with a five-run eighth. After a walk, a hit batsman, and a single, SDCC's Garrison McLagan doubled down the left field line to score two. Viera then singled to plate a pair of runs, and Christian Johnson completed the scoring with a double to bring home Viera to give SDCC an 11-2 advantage.
Hemmer (6-3) tossed 8.0 innings, scattering six hits while allowing two runs (one earned) and striking out two. David Johnson tossed a perfect ninth to complete the win.
Kamakani Usui (3-6) took the loss for the Lions. Usui threw 3.0 innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits.
Gotta led SDCC, going 3-3 with 3 runs scored. Alex Mann, Chad Erickson, McLagan, and Viera had two hits each for the Hawks. Eichhorst was 1-3 with his seventh homerun of the season, while scoring three runs and driving in two.
The Hawks complete the season series with the Lions with a double header tomorrow. First pitch is set for noon.
