EL CAJON, Calif.—For the second straight day, San Diego Christian College and The Master's College found themselves playing extra innings. And like the day before, it was the Mustangs who were able to come out on top, taking the nightcap of the double header 5-1 in 9 innings. TMC also captured game one, 10-0.
SDCC falls to 21-23 overall and 11-13 in the GSAC, while the Mustangs move to 26-9 overall and 18-6 in conference play.
In game one, TMC scored one in the first, four in the third, four in the fourth, and another single run in the seventh. SDCC was kept off balance by the Mustang's Andrew Klausmeier (2-1), who tossed 7.0 innings, scattering six hits and striking out three.
Jeff Lusardi led SDCC in game one, going 2-4.
Game two appeared to be headed the way of game one, as TMC loaded the bases with no outs off of SDCC starter Tyler Sanborn. After a visit to the mound from pitching coach Doug Jones, Sanborn promptly retired the next two hitters on strikeouts and induced a groundout to end the inning.
After loading the bases in the first, Sanborn retired 13 straight hitters.
The Mustangs took the lead in the top of the fifth, when Shackleford walked, reached second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch.
SDCC tied the game in the bottom half of the inning, when Gilbert Viera singled and came around to score on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1.
SDCC threatened in the bottom of the seventh, when the Hawks loaded the bases with two outs. But TMC's Tyler Elrod was able to get SDCC's leading hitter Chad Erickson to ground out to end the inning.
The Mustangs were able to take the lead for good in the top of the ninth, scoring four unearned runs to take the 5-1 advantage.
Sanborn (3-1) suffered the loss for the Hawks. The senior righty threw 8.0 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and striking out four.
Tommy Kistner (2-0) collected the win in relief of Elrod. Elrod tosses 7.0 innings, striking out three and allowing one run on seven hits.
The Hawks continue their season with three games at Cal State San Marcos next week. SDCC will play a single game on Wednesday, March 27 at 3:00pm and a double header on Friday, March 29 starting at noon.
