SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—In their previous meeting, San Diego Christian College overcame a 19-point first half deficit to defeat then No. 5 Westmont College. This time around, the Hawks would not be able to mount a comeback as the SDCC saw their season come to an end on Thursday night, falling to top seed and No. 11 Westmont College 84-69 in the GSAC Tournament First Round.
SDCC ends their season 7-17 (4-10), while WC moves to 25-6 (12-2).
The Hawks took an early 8-7 lead on a Derek Dickerson layup off an assist from Kwaminique Brandon with 16:20 on the clock. After both teams continued to go back and forth, SDCC's Peter Beale-Wirsing converted a layup to knot the game at 16-16 at the halfway mark of the first half.
Westmont then closed out the first half on a 33-10 run to take a commanding 49-28 lead heading into the locker room.
The Hawks fell victim to the Warriors' hot-shooting in the first half. WC connected on 21-32 (65.6 percent) shot attempts, including 4-9 from deep. SDCC was 11-29 (37.9 percent) over the first twenty minutes, while not connecting on a 3-pointer (0-7).
The second half saw the Hawks keep pace with the Warriors, but the halftime deficit was too much and WC moved on to the semifinals of the conference tournament.
SDCC was led by Kevin Dawson with 14 points. Dawson, playing in his final game for the Hawks, was 7-12 from the field and also hauled in 6 rebounds. Dickerson added 13 points and Derrick Thompson had 10 points.
Christopher Miller led the Warriors with 24 points while Jordan Sachs had 16 points.
Westmont shot 58.6 percent (34-58) from the field for the game. SDCC was 25-58 (42.1 percent), while connecting on 3-15 from beyond the arc after entering the game fifteenth in the NAIA in 3-point percentage (38.1 percent).
The GSAC tournament continues on Saturday, with No. 4 Concordia visiting No. 1 Westmont and No. 3 Arizona Christian visiting No. 2 Hope International. All games are scheduled for 7:30pm starts.
