PHOENIX, Ariz. – In their first ever GSAC meeting since Arizona Christian joined this year, San Diego Christian College was able to take game one of the three game series 7-2 Friday over the Firestorm.
SDCC's Jesse Hernandez picked up his first win of the season going six strong innings, giving up five hits, two runs (one earned), and striking out two.
The Firestorm were able to get on the board early off Hernandez. In the bottom of the first, ACU collected three hits in the inning as Phil Creecy drove in Chris Russell to give Arizona Christian the 1-0 lead.
The Hawks quickly responded in the top of the second plating four runs. After three consecutive singles by Taylor Eichhorst, Peter Hoyt, and Gilbert Viera, Christian Johnson singled to right center scoring Hoyt and Eichhorst. Jeff Lusardi also drove in two runs on a single to right field to bring the score to 4-1 in favor of the Hawks.
Arizona Christian scored their last run in the third and was shut out the rest of the game. Hernandez was able to get an inning-ending double play in the third to prevent the Firestorm from tacking more runs. Brock Heerdt relieved Hernandez for 2-hitless innings and Jeremy Blare capped off the game with a strike out and another hitless inning. The two combined for three strikeouts and two walks.
SDCC scored one in the sixth and two in the seventh to complete the scoring. The Hawks combined for 17 hits. Chad Erickson and Eichhorst finished with three hits apiece.
With the win, the Hawks moved to 8-4 on the season and 3-4 in GSAC play. SDCC finishes their Phoenix road trip with a double header tomorrow against ACU. First game is set for 11 a.m.
