SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—After rescheduling games twice and switching locations due to rain, the San Diego Christian College baseball team kicked off Golden State Athletic Conference play on Sunday, falling to Westmont College 6-1.
The loss is SDCC's first of the season, as the Hawks fall to 4-1 (0-1). The Warriors move to 3-0 (1-0).
"We had plenty of opportunities to get on the board this afternoon, but could not get a clutch hit," said SDCC Assistant Head Coach Ralph Grajeda. "It was 2-1 going into the eighth and we pitched well, but timely hitting eluded us today."
Neither team could get on the board in the early going, with both SDCC's Joey Aquino and WC's Torin Shaikh pitching well. The Warriors struck first in the bottom of the third, pushing across one run on a pair of hits.
The Warriors added another run in the fourth off of SDCC Jesse Hernandez, who replaced Aquino in the bottom of the fourth.
With the Warriors still up 2-0, SDCC threatened in the top of the sixth. Christian Johnson reached on an error and Richard Aguirre advanced him to second on a sacrifice bunt. Johnson was then gunned down at third on a ground ball to shortstop off the bat of Alex Mann. After Chad Erickson walked, a strike out left two Hawks' runners stranded.
SDCC cut the Warriors' lead in half in the top of the seventh, when Taylor Eichhorst connected on his first homerun of the season, driving the ball over the left field wall.
After WC added four runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 6-1 lead, the Hawks again threatened in the top of the ninth, but left the bases loaded to end the game.
Aquino (1-1) took the loss for SDCC. The junior righty tossed 3.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits. Hernandez threw 4.0 innings in relief, giving up two runs on three hits while striking out one.
Shaikh (2-0) and Michael Rishwain combined to limit the SDCC offensive attack. Shaikh and Rishwain allowed the one run, scattering four hits and striking out six.
SDCC will battle WC in a double header tomorrow at Russ Carr Field in Santa Barbara. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 11:00am.
