PHOENIX, Ariz.— In their inaugural trip to Arizona Christian University, the San Diego Christian College men's basketball team fell to the newest Golden State Athletic Conference member 90-74.
The Hawks fall to 5-9 overall and now 2-3 in the GSAC. ACU moves to 13-4 and 3-2 in conference play.
Both teams exchanged buckets early, with SDCC taking a 8-7 lead after a jumper from Derrick Thompson.
ACU then went on a 9-0 run to take a 16-8 lead with just over thirteen minutes left in the first half. The Hawks came right back, bringing the Firestorm lead down to 19-16 around the eleven minute mark.
After a few minutes of back and forth scoring, ACU went on a 15-6 run to close out the half to take a 46-32 advantage heading into the locker room.
The second half saw the Hawks slowly chip away at the Firestorm lead, bringing it to single digits at 62-53 on a Derek Dickerson 3-pointer with just under twelve minutes to play.
SDCC could not get any closer, as ACU matched the Hawks shot for shot. The Firestorm pushed their lead late in the game, eventually capturing the win.
ACU had six players score in double figures, led by Jackson Helms and Charles King with 14 points each. Jordan Block had 13 points and Mike Navar had 12. Daniel Cornelius chipped in 11 points and Mason Jones added 10.
SDCC shot 47.3 percent (26-55) from the field for the game while ACU was 34-63 (54%) from the field.
The Firestorm won the rebounding battle 38-27, leading to 22 second-chance points.
SDCC continues conference play on Saturday, January 25 at The Master's College. Tip is scheduled for 5:30pm.
