SAN DIEGO – Hosting Vanguard in their first home GSAC game of the year, the Hawks started off strong but couldn't quite overcome the Lions as SDC fell to VU 3-1 on Thursday night.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 5-8 overall and 0-4 in conference play. The Lions improved to an even 6-6 and 4-0 in the GSAC.
The first set was close at first, but the Hawks were able to extend their lead after a Taylor Brydon's kill gave them the 13-6 lead. The Lions cut their deficit to as little as three points but a Melissa Pittelkau kill and a service error gave SDC the early win.
A close 2nd set paved the way for the third set as both teams had earned a set point. Set 3 was close the whole way but Vanguard tallied the last four points to secure to 25-21 set win.
VU started off the fourth with five-straight points to the tune of a 5-0 lead. Unlike the previous two sets, the Hawks weren't able to make a comeback and keep it close.
Brydon led the team with 14 kills. Pittelkau was next with nine and Samantha Tago and Anekka Guy tied with seven. Nina Wyer recorded a team-high 17 assists. Katie Patterson was right behind her with 16.
The Hawks are back on the court Saturday at 4 p.m. against the Hope International.
