In the Hawks first home game of the year, they evened their GSAC record to 2-2 in a 10-5 win over the Royals of Hope International. SDC scored in five of their eight offensive innings with a 14 hit attack that included two hits from Josh Sidley, Brooks Fages, Brock Mosier, and Justin Hawkins. The hitting star for the Hawks was freshman right fielder Tyler Schindel, who went 3 for 4 and drove in five runs beginning with a 3-run shot to right field in the top of the second inning. Once in the lead, a combination of consistent scoring and enough pitching allowed SDC to take the first win of this three game series.
In the third inning, SDC got RBIs from Fages and Schindel for two runs, then plated one run in the fourth on a Sidley RBI. In the bottom of the fifth, the Hawks chased HIU's pitcher, Castillo (1-2), with RBIs by Schindel and Mosier and a sacrifice fly by Zach Ambrose.
Hawks pitching was solid most of the day, beginning with Jerry Quemada securing the win with six innings to move his record to 1-0. Logan Taylor, Mark Young, and Caleb Rodusky each pitched one inning to finish off the Royals. Overall, SDC gave up only 7 hits, but 4 of them were solo home runs for most of the runs against them. The Hawks are now 3-5 overall for the year and look to travel for the other two games in the three game series at Hope International in Fullerton, CA on Monday after the rain passes.
