EL CAJON, Calif. – The SDC men's basketball team held a 15-point lead at halftime against Vanguard.
The bad news? The Lions roared back and forced an overtime period.
The better news? The Hawks were able to hang on in the extra frame and earn their third conference win of the season beating VU 86-82 Saturday night.
With the win, SDC improves to 7-12 on the season and 3-7 in conference play. The Hawks are now in sixth place in the GSAC and if the season ended now, they would be heading to the conference tournament. The Lions fall to 4-18 overall and 2-8 in the GSAC.
Derek Novsek had a team-high 25 points and went a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line. He also hit three 3-pointers and grabbed six rebounds. Isaiah Milan added 20 points and Nathan Klekas went for 13 points and seven rebounds.
Vanguard led in the early going but it was Klekas's trey that gave SDC the first lead of the half, 9-8. Vanguard responded going on a 16-8 run to take a 7-point lead with 6:54 remaining. Anthony Gonzalez converted on a layup that kick started the comeback for the Hawks in the half. SDC went on a 16-0 run to take the lead back. Milan hit two triples in the scoring outburst. Novsek ended the scoring in the half with one of his treys giving the Hawks the 15-point lead.
Early in the second half, Luis Salgado made a layup increasing SDC's largest lead of the game to 17 points. But slowly and slowly, the Lions pecked away at the deficit and were able to tie the game at 62-62 with less than four minutes remaining.
The Hawks were looking in good shape to win the game in regular time, but a 3-pointer by Vanguard tied the game again, this time with 20 seconds left. Milan had the last shot for the Hawks in regulation but his 3-pointer missed the mark, forcing the OT period.
Novsek started the scoring in OT with a 3-pointer. VU was able to grab a 2-point lead with 2:23 left but the Hawks showed resilience, retook the lead, and hung on for good making important free throws down the stretch.
SDC will travel to The Master's University on Wednesday with hopes to cement their case for the playoffs. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
