EL CAJON, Calif. – The SDC women's basketball team took a lead into halftime over No. 5 Vanguard.
But unfortunately for the Hawks, the Lions edged the Hawks as VU was dominant from the free throw line down the stretch to hang on to the 69-62 win.
With the loss, SDC falls to 13-8 on the season and 3-7 in conference play. VU stays perfect in conference at 8-0 and only has blemish on the year, 20-1 overall record.
Natalie Perales led the Hawks with 15 points. She also chipped in five assists, three steals and four rebounds. Anessa Wolfblack followed with 12 points, Shayleen Toehe and Danna Robles were also in double figures with 11 and 10 respectively.
The Hawks stormed out to a 10-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game. Vanguard closed the gap but SDC still had the lead after one quarter, 13-11. The Hawks led by as much as nine in the second quarter as Toehe hit a 3-pointer with 2:54 left in the half. SDC went into the halftime break up 33-31, leading for all the first 20 minutes.
The Lions grabbed their first lead of the game late in the third. As part of a 12-2 run, VU hit a pair of free throws to take the lead. Both teams traded buckets in the next couple of possessions before the Lions hit a trey at the buzzer of the third quarter as they took a 2-point lead into the final quarter. The Lions would lead by as much as nine. The Hawks got to within one point but were unable to retake the lead and pull off the upset.
SDC will travel to The Master's University on Wednesday, Feb. 1.
