PHOENIX -- Looking to grab their first conference win of the season, the SDC men's basketball team did it in a big way as they knocked off No. 14 Arizona Christian 69-67 Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 5-8 on the season and 1-3 in GSAC play. The Firestorm fall to 12-3 overall and 0-3 in conference.
Luis Salgado gave the Hawks their first lead in the first half a minute and a half into the first. The Firestorm though retook the lead andled by as much as nine with seven minutes to play in half. SDC mounted a comeback and came within one point, right at the half trailing 35-34. Derek Novsek's at the end of one gave the Hawks some confidence heading into the locker room.
Fredrick added a triple to start off the second half and gave the Hawks their first lead since earlier in the game. An Isaiah Milan trey and Klekas layup gave SDC a seven point lead with 18:24 remaining in the game.
Both teams traded buckets throughout the second half and ACU held a three-point advantage late in the game. Trailing 65-62, Milan hit a clutch 3-pointer and Fredrick did the same with 24 seconds remaining to give SDC the late lead. ACU converted a layup late but the Hawks held on for their first GSAC win.
