EL CAJON, Calif. – The SDC women's basketball team was unable to shake off their rust after a long layoff as they fell 61-54 to Lethbridge Friday night after shooting 30.5 percent from the field.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 11-2 on the year. The Pronghorns improve to 3-8.
Lethbridge shot 51.1 percent from the floor in the win. They outrebounded SDC 42-32 including a 33-19 defensive rebound advantage.
Lam started the scoring off in the game with a trey less than a minute after the opening tip. The two teams were tied at 6-6 with 7:21 left before Lethbridge went on a 12-5 run to finish off the quarter to lead 18-11 after the first 10 minutes.
The Pronghorns added a trey in the first minute of the second to lead by double digits. The Hawks cut the deficit to four after six straight points. SDC retook the lead for the first time since the first quarter thanks to a Wolfblack 3-pointer. The two teams battle it out for the last three minutes of the half with the score being tied heading into the break 27-27.
In the third, both teams took jabs at the other with the lead exchanging five times and three ties. Trailing by four with 8:03 left in the game, Lam hit two free throws and Shayleen Toehe hit a triple to give the Hawks a 47-46 lead with 6:18 to go.
Lethbridge added individual free throw to tie and a layup to take the lead for good handing the Hawks just their second loss of the season.
SDC will hit the road in the next few contests as they take on Hope International Jan. 3 in Fullerton at 5:30 p.m.
