EL CAJON, Calif. – In their first home game in over a month, Menlo played spoiler as they defeated the SDC men's basketball team 77-70 Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 3-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play. The Oaks win their conference opener and improve to 6-4 on the season.
Isaiah Milan scored a game-high 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting including 50 percent from beyond the arc. He added five rebounds and five assists. Derek Novsek and Nathan Klekas scored 13 points apiece.
Novsek scored first for the Hawks with a 3-pointer giving SDC a 3-2 lead. A Milan trey doubled Menlo's score with the Hawks leading 12-6. The Oaks would cut that deficit and lead by as much as four in the half with both teams trading baskets throughout the half, but the Hawks entered the halftime break with a 38-35 lead with two Hayden Fredrick free throws.
In the second half, Shawn Stanley's 3-pointer made the score 47-45 in favor of the Hawks, their last lead of the game. The Oaks led by five with 6:56 remaining in the game. SDC got back within one point twice before the Oaks gained a sizeable lead to hold off the Hawks.
SDC shot 37.5 percent from the floor including 9-of-22 from beyond the arc. The Oaks shot well at 45 percent hitting 26 shots. The undersized Hawks were outrebounded by the Oaks 42-34.
The Hawks will be back on the court as they travel to La Sierra to take on the Golden Eagles on Dec. 20 with a tipoff scheduled for 5 p.m.
