SANTEE, Calif. – The Hawks needed a lot more points than the required 25 to win a set. And I mean, A. LOT.
The SDC women's volleyball team won the dramatic third set 34-32 en route to a sweep of La Sierra on Senior Day Tuesday.
The Hawks hit at a .295 clip in the three sets. Their best set was Set 1 with 13 kills and only four errors. With the win, SDC improves to 13-16 on the season while dropping La Sierra falls to 13-12.
In the first set, LSU and SDC battled in the early going with La Sierra taking a slim lead 17-16 midway through the set. The Hawks, thanks to Beezer and Jeyci Kaili, finished off the set on a 9-1 run to claim their first point of the game. Beezer tallied three straight kills for points 23,24 and 25. Kaili tallied a kill and a block assist also in the run.
After a 4-4 tie, the Hawks made their move in the second set. SDC rolled to a 13-2 run taking full control of the set. The Hawks also scored the last five points of the set with seniors Eicher and Alexa Lambert chipping in with kills.
Set 3 was one to remember. The most contested set all season for the Hawks. Leading or tied for the majority of the set, the Golden Eagles were looking good to force a fourth set as they took a 24-22 lead after an attack error by SDC. Alli Beezer's kill off a Ashlyn Riding pass to bring the deficit to one. Then Eicher's kill tied the set at 24-24. After the 24-24 tie a total of seven ties and four ties. The Hawks were on the brink of a set loss at 28-27 before Eicher struck a kill that got the crowd pumping and yelling. Tied 32-32, Molly Witzmann's kill for the 33rd point and a bad set gave the Hawks the 34th and final point of the night.
Riding led with a game-high 37 assists and had two block assists. Kaili led the team with four.
The Hawks will complete their season on Friday as they travel to Arizona Christian. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
