PHOENIX – Down two in the ninth inning, the SDC baseball team completed their comeback as they defeated Arizona Christian 12-10 Friday afternoon.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 20-16 overall and 12-13 in GSAC play. The Firestorm fall to 9-23 and 6-19 respectively.
ACU score more than half their runs in the first four innings. They scored a run in the first, three in the second, and two in the fourth to break out to a 6-0 lead.
RBIs by Caeden Barnes and Steven Pico gave SDC their first runs of the game in the fifth inning. They also tallied three in the next inning cutting their deficit to one run. Stephan Haviar reached on an error in the sixth but the errant throw scored two runners. Brooks Fages singled up the middle scoring Justin Distefano.
The Firestorm, however, answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to wipe away the progress SDC made.
A four-run seventh drew the Hawks even with ACU. RBIs by Bobby Mead, Haviar, Fages, and Barnes squared the game at 9-9.
Just as they did before, ACU scored a run in the bottom half of a Hawk comeback, leading 10-9 after seven complete innings.
But the Hawks didn't quit and scored three in the ninth to grab the win.
SDC starter Michael Robards was touched up for nine runs, eight earned in six innings.
The Hawks and Firestorm wrap up the series tomorrow with a double-header scheduled for 11 a.m.
