SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The first run of the game for any team came in the 13th inning.
Unfortunately for the Hawks, it was No. 16 Westmont who captured the walk-off win Friday in the first of a 3-game series.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 9-8 overall and 5-5 in GSAC play. The Warriors improve to 15-3 and a GSAC best 6-1.
Offense and runners were a premium for the first nine innings. The Hawks nor the Warriors could get multiple hits in any of those innings. Westmont had their best chance of the game in the bottom of the tenth inning, when they tallied a leadoff double. Daniel Kopas got out of the jam with a pop up and a fly out.
After a quick 1-2-3 for both teams in the 11th and 12th, Westmont's Alex Bush was hit by a pitch with one out. The next warrior batter doubled down the left field line to move the runners to second and third before a sacrifice fly ended the marathon.
SDC starter Gio Ochoa was magnificent in his nine scoreless innings of work allowing just five hits and two walks. He struck out three lowering his ERA to 2.38 on the season, pitching under the weather.
"Gio battled through the flu all week and hadn't picked up a ball all week until Thursday," Head Coach Landon Burt said. "He's such a competitor and so fun to watch. Daniel Butler (Westmont) was equally impressive and that was a fun game to be a part of and watch the two compete on the hill. Unfortunately we came up short but somebody had to win and we just have to tip our cap to Westmont and prepare for tomorrow."
Stephen Haviar tallied two of the three hits recorded by the Hawks.
These two teams, weather permitting, will square off in a double-header on Saturday. Game time has been pushed up to 10 a.m. to try and beat the rain.
